Ms. Gibson

BC is proposing to extend its predator reduction program for another 5 years to 2031 on the false premise that it will help protect endangered caribou populations.

The government/you have announced they are not seeking public input, most probably because this government knows, based on it’s own 2022 engagement survey, that a majority of the electorate is opposed to the predator reduction/wolf cull.  Where is the democracy in the autocratic action of refusing to seek public input?

I am asking you to contact the premier and the relevant cabinet minister to both reject this extension and to take scientifically meaningful action to protect caribou.

Science has and continues to show that it is industrial activity and habitat destruction that are the primary causes of caribou decline.  Killing wolves will not save the caribou populations, particularly while logging (including logging in federally mapped critical habitat areas) and other industrial activity in BC’s forests is left unaddressed as these activities have significant and negative impacts on ecosystems.

Aerial gunning, trapping and other methods used to kill wolves and cougars as part of this cull are inhumane.

If this government sincerely wishes to protect caribou populations, then it must follow the science.  Restore habitat in the best interests of the ecosystem, not industry.  The caribou population will recovery quickly just as the wild salmon recovered quickly as soon as open net fish farms were removed from specific rivers.

This government has also failed to perform a formal environmental impact assessment of the broader impact of removing large numbers of wolves raising concerns of ecosystem stability, emerging diseases and animal welfare, including aerial shooting of wolves  from helicopters.  When the US devastated/removed wolf populations in some parks the entire ecosystem of the parks was so badly damaged the authorities has to re-introduce wolves to restore balance in the ecosystem.  Let us learn from their mistakes rather than repeating them!

Most British Columbians would find it reprehensible to spend $1.5 million annually to kill wolves when our medical system is substandard and many of us do not have a family doctor.

I repeat my request that you contact the premier and relevant minister to reject the extension and expenditure; I will follow up shortly to learn your results.

Thank you,
Elizabeth Borek
