Island Time, now seems to be a thing of the past as municipality councils across mid to south Vancouver Island are being criticised for unplanned overcrowding. Nothing against growth or development, only that measured, planned growth is necessary for functional, healthy communities.

Present complaints regarding Vancouver Island municipal councils regarding overcrowding often focus on rapid densification outpacing infrastructure, leading to traffic congestion, strained community amenities, and decreased quality of life.

Residents frequently raise concerns about high-density developments approved without corresponding upgrades to schools, parks, or recreation facilities, demanding better infrastructure planning.

Key Concerns and Complaints

Infrastructure Lag: Rapid densification projects (e.g., in areas like Langford or Nanaimo) often exceed current water, sewer, and road capacity, resulting in traffic jams and sewage system stress.

Reduced Amenities: Residents report that new developments lack adequate new community centers, parks, or school spots, putting pressure on existing, outdated facilities.

Development Pressure: Many complaints stem from residents feeling that councils favor developers, pushing through dense zoning changes in formerly low-density neighborhoods.

Lack of Public Consultation: Concerns are often raised that public feedback regarding development density is ignored during the approval process.

How to File a Complaint

Residents are increasingly pushing for mandatory infrastructure studies before development approvals are granted and more rigorous public consultation processes on Vancouver Island.
