The District of North Vancouver has decided to discontinue the District’s membership with the Urban Development Institute (UDI), a registered lobbying organization for corporate interests in development and real estate.
District of North Vancouver Councillor Lisa Muri and the District’s Mayor, Mike Little – had voiced their concerns about the membership last year to District Staff. Upon being asked to review the membership, District Staff decided to discontinue the District’s membership with the UDI, and has no plans to renew the membership in the future.
Yesterday, the North Vancouver Community Association Network (NVCAN) sent a letter to the District citing a CRD Watch article, and asked in the letter for the District to ends its membership with the UDI lobby. The Mayor responded, confirming that the District had decided recently to end its UDI membership.

This marks the 7th municipality to be confirmed having withdrawn its UDI membership during the last 3 years, and the first on the Lower Mainland to be observed having done so.
Local governments and the regional government that discontinued their UDI memberships, in chronological order:
Saanich – Unanimous Council decision (2023)
View Royal – Unanimous Council Decision (2023)
Oak Bay – Staff Decision (2024)
CRD – Staff decision (2024)
Sooke – Unanimous Council Decision (2025)
District of North Vancouver (2025 or 2026)
City of Victoria – Council Decision by 8-1 vote. (2026)
Township of Esquimalt – Staff Decision (2026)
The following municipalities in the Metro Vancouver region, were paying members of the UDI at the time that the UDI pulled down its members directory from public view , and most if not all of these that were listed are likely to still be paying members of the UDI.
City of Abbotsford
City of Chilliwack
City of Delta
City of Langley
City of Maple Ridge
City of North Vancouver
City of Port Moody
City of Vancouver
The Metro Vancouver Regional Government is still a UDI member, as I have recently seen the proof of payment through FOI.

May the separation of lobby and state continue on the lower mainland and across British Columbia.
