Like wooden tombstones: The latest tree decimation in Elk/Beaver Lake Regional Park.

In the morning hours of today, tree cutting trucks towing wood chippers behind them made their way into the vicinity of Elk/Beaver Lake Regional Park, which is managed by the CRD.

Images of these vehicles will be posted soon.

In the evening, I approached what looked like a funeral.

Among various stumps, mangled and gnarled; remains of one stump in particular, simply appeared grotesque, having the appearance of having been pulverised. Was this one of the older stumps, that had gotten in the way of wood clearing machines?

Within the last 5 years I recall a similar episode of numerous trees felled in exactly this area, their stumps remaining like tomb stones, with their petrified slabs testament to the same manner of wanton destruction.

The tree stump on the right bottom corner was likely one of the trees that were pulled down during the last half decade. The tree stump at centre right, was freshly cut.

A view of the same sad scene from a different angle:

Nearby this stump was what appears to be a Doug Fir senselessly cut in two with the appearance of bleeding sap down the trunk:

A wood chip pile was found nearby:

The remains of a decapitated tree stands like a pillar, surrounded by stumps like petrified seats around it. These stumps were likely trees felled in the first wave to hit this area during the last half decade.

The same stumps from the earlier cutting:

Another decapitated tree:

Various remains in the area abound of trees felled in an earlier cut.

Around the time of the first tree decimation several years back, I noticed a new playground sprung up, absurdly, they were supposed to be beaver themed, because beavers cut trees right? I suspect that some of the cut trees wound up as part of the follies.

A beaver-themed playground, or an attempted recreation of Woodhenge?

The CRD Watch investigation will continue.
